Ironman NZ Results Analysis

Ironman New Zealand Results Analysis – The Marathon

The hardest discipline to nail in an Ironman is the marathon. It is the discipline where you start the most fatigued and it’s the discipline which can be most affected by how hard you raced the legs before it.

Fluid Movements Head Coach, Sean Foster looked back to our main squad ironman event for 2017, New Zealand to see how our athletes stacked up against the competition in their age group categories for each discipline.

New Zealand served up a very tough day weather wise with strong winds all day. Competitors found it more difficult due to conditions to moderate their bike effort to ensure a good marathon run to follow. Analysing how the Fluid athletes compared to their competition with each discipline gave us a great insight into how they performed, especially on the Ironman Marathon which became even more important due to a tough swim bike. Ironman athletes know too well that you can lose 10-15mins with an average bike performance, but you can blow out by well over an hour with a poor marathon.

Here are our results.

As you can see the Fluid squad athletes when compared to other athletes in their category, the run was where their performance shined and where most time was made.

  • 10 out of the 11athlete’s marathon was their best discipline when comparing bike and run splits to their competitors.
  • 3 x 3rd fastest marathon splits in category for Liam Randell (25-29age), Fiona Coyle (30-34age) and Juan Torres (40-44age).
